A 59-year-old woman was treated for smoke inhalation in what investigators are calling an accidental electrical fire that occurred in the basement of an Abingdon home Saturday night.

According to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal, the fire occurred around 11:13 p.m. in a basement bedroom of a two-story, single-family home in the Hebron Terrace neighborhood.

Investigators said the fire occurred after an occupant noticed that the home’s breaker had tripped. According to the fire marshal, after “some time” of resetting the breaker, the woman smelled smoke and noticed a fire at the rear of a couch, spreading.

She alerted the other occupants and escaped with her 2- and 3-year-old children. Another woman was transported to a hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation and is expected to make a full recovery.

Roughly 35 firefighters from the Abingdon Fire Company contained the fire to the basement and extinguished the flames in about 10 minutes, according to the fire marshal’s office.

Based on a preliminary investigation, investigators believe the fire to have occurred from an electrical failure in the home, the fire marshal said.

A notice of investigation sent by the fire marshal said the blaze caused about $25,000 in structural damage and $25,000 in content loss. Moderate-to-extensive smoke and soot damage to the upper floors prevented the family from returning to the home.
