Hannah Threse Mayor was born at 8:50 a.m., Jan. 2, making her the first baby born at University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Health this year.

Hannah, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 14 ounces, is the fourth child and only daughter of Malori and Mark Mayor, both 38, of Aberdeen.

Older brothers Mark, 5, Gus, 3, and Teddy, 2, are in varying states of excitement, their parents said.

“[Mark] is definitely excited and understands what’s going on,” Malori Mayor said. “The other two don’t quite [understand], and I think they’re in for a shock.”

The Mayors live at Aberdeen Proving Ground, where Mark works as an assistant program manager for the U.S. Army. He holds the rank of major and is originally from Wisconsin. Malori is from Texas, and though she is a registered nurse, she works as a mother full-time. The pair met on a dating website for Catholics known as Ave Maria Singles in 2010.

Malori said that her family has moved all over the country due to her husband’s military service, and the pair have only been at Aberdeen Proving Ground with their children since May. Both she and Mark were in a state of disbelief when they learned they were having their first girl.

“We found out before she was born, and I fully expected to have a fourth boy,” Malori said. “It was shocking and exciting and we finally got to use the girl name we had picked out for four years.”

The Mayors said they chose the name Hannah because of its ties to the Old Testament; Hannah was a biblical figure who struggled with infertility and prayed for a child.

“It’s special to us because we struggled with infertility before getting pregnant the first time,” Malori said. “We feel extremely blessed that we have four [children] now after not being able to have any for several years.”

Despite loving what comes with being a “boy mom,” Malori she’s excited to teach her daughter what she loves about being a woman and hopes to pass on the skills of what it takes to be a wife or a mother one day.

“Or maybe God has other plans for her, but I just want to teach her how to be a woman of grace and blessing to other people,” she said.

Upper Chesapeake presented the Mayors with a gift basket to celebrate its first baby of 2025, a tradition the hospital carries on each year.
