An Aberdeen woman has been charged in the death of her five-and-a-half-month-old daughter who police say sustained multiple life-threatening injuries.

The mother, 32-year-old Maya Dennis, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree child abuse after police said she made statements indicating that she was responsible for the unnamed infant’s injuries.

Police were alerted to the infant’s injuries on Sunday when deputies responded to the Johns Hopkins Pediatric Trauma Center to a report from Child Protective Services of suspected child abuse, the Harford County Sheriff’s Office said in a release.

Upon arrival, officers were informed by medical staff that an infant had been brought to the hospital by ambulance with multiple skull fractures, brain bleeds, a fractured leg and “numerous other life-threatening injuries,” according to the release.

An investigation was launched into how the infant sustained the injuries, which led to detectives securing a search warrant of the child’s home in the 200 block of Mayberry Drive in Aberdeen, according to police.

Detectives conducted multiple interviews of potential witnesses and suspects resulting in “inconsistent accounts” of how the infant sustained her injuries, the release said. Police said the investigation identified Dennis as being in sole care and custody of the child when her injuries were inflicted.

According to the release, Dennis was arrested by the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Warrant Apprehension Unit while at Johns Hopkins Pediatric Trauma Center and has been transported to the Harford County Detention Center where she is being held ahead of her bail hearing scheduled for Thursday.

Police said the investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information to call detectives at 443-409-3576.
