About 17% of Harford County voters have turned out so far to vote early in this year’s presidential elections. That is the fifth-highest total among all counties in the state, according to the Maryland Board of Elections data.
As of Monday, 33,051 of Harford’s 192,898 eligible registered voters have cast ballots. Early voting continues through Thursday.
The statewide average is 13.5%; only Calvert, Queen Anne’s, Saint Mary’s and Talbot counties have higher percentages of voters than Harford so far.
“This is a pretty typical election for us,” said Stephanie Taylor, director of the Harford County Board of Elections. “Fall is always busy, and of course, the general election is always busy.”
Harford County has four polling places, and McFaul Activity Center in Bel Air has by far been the most heavily trafficked, according to state Board of Elections data. Since early voting opened on Oct. 24, about half of the county’s early voters (8.64%) have voted at the center, totaling 16,661 visitors over six days.
“McFaul Activity Center has been extremely busy, but we’ve beefed up the equipment and judge count, and we have line managers in place so the voters are going through the location smoothly,” Taylor said.
To further accommodate voters in Bel Air, Taylor said shuttles are scheduled to transport county residents from the activity center to an overflow parking lot at the neighboring Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration building, if necessary.
The Jarrettsville Fire Hall has the second highest total of early voters, with 6,624 voters, followed by the Havre De Grace Activity Center (5,384 voters) and the Edgewood Recreation and Activity Center (4,382 voters).
Of Harford’s 64,081 registered Democrats, about 16%, or 10,169, have voted early; and of the 80,972 registered Republicans, about 22%, or 17,459, have cast ballots at early voting centers.
Early voting will remain open daily through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the following locations:
Edgewood Recreation and Activity Center, 1980 Brookside Drive, Edgewood
Havre De Grace Activity Center, 351 Lewis Lane, Havre de Grace
Jarrettsville Fire Hall, 3825 Federal Hill Road, Jarrettsville
McFaul Activity Center, 525 West MacPhail Road, Bel Air
“At Jarrettsville, people tend to usually show up later in the afternoon,” Taylor said. “Edgewood is usually our slowest one, so if you want to avoid the crowd, go there. Havre de Grace — that’s on the slower side, too.”
