Annie’s Playground at Edgeley Grove Park in Fallston is closed “until further notice” after maintenance staff discovered cracks in several structures.
The Harford County Department of Parks and Recreation posted to social media shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday to alert the public of the playground’s closure. Upon discovering cracks near the playground’s tallest slide, maintenance staff wrapped a portion of the playground with temporary safety fencing and caution tape and also blocked off its entrance to prevent foot traffic.
“As a result, we are closing the entire playground until further notice. We are actively working with the playground contractor to look at the structures and identify a repair or replacement. We will provide an update as we receive them,” the posts read.
The playground had a grand reopening in 2023 after undergoing months-long renovations, which included removing the old, pressure-treated wooden equipment and installing a new playground with a poured rubber safety surfacing. The project cost $1.5 million and was provided through the Local Parks and Playground Infrastructure Program administered by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
Annie’s Playground opened in 2005, two years after the death of 6-year-old Annie Cumpston, who the playground is named after. Cumpston, a Jarrettsville native, was struck by a hit-and-run driver in downtown Baltimore after attending a circus with her family.
A decade after Cumpston’s death in 2013, Paul Magness, then-chief of capital planning and development for Harford County Parks and Recreation, estimated that “tens of thousands of people use that park on a yearly basis.”
Annie’s Playground is located at 864 Smith Lane in Fallston.
