COVID-19, pneumonia and dehydration contributed to the death of a 33-year-old woman in custody at the Harford County Detention Center in May, according to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office.

The state medical examiner ruled that the woman died of natural causes complicated by opioid withdrawal and other contributing factors, the sheriff’s office said. At the detention center, she was under the supervision of the medical services provider for medically managed withdrawal, the sheriff’s office said.

She was found unresponsive in her cell around 10:40 p.m. May 7, and medics declared her dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said. She was arrested May 3 and charged with third-degree burglary, a felony, according to court documents.

She is the second inmate to die of COVID-19 in custody at the detention center, the sheriff’s office said.
