An “extended” closure is in place for northbound Interstate 95 in Harford County as crews battle the fiery aftermath of a fatal crash Tuesday morning, according to Maryland State Police.

Troopers responded at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to northbound I-95 near the Maryland House Travel Plaza and found a pickup truck had crashed into a tractor-trailer that was parked on the right shoulder, police said.

The driver of the pickup truck died at the scene, police said. The pickup truck caught fire, spreading to the tractor-trailer.

Harford County hazmat technicians responded, along with the Maryland Department of the Environment’s emergency response team due to lithium-ion batteries onboard the blazing tractor-trailer. The batteries aren’t expected to be a threat to the environment, MDE spokesperson Jay Apperson said, as they appeared to be “components of items such as watches and toys, as opposed to a large shipment of batteries alone.”

Environmental response crews were on scene making sure that firefighting foam is properly cleaned up,  Apperson said.

Police said that no injuries were reported other than the pickup truck driver, whose identity wasn’t released. Officials recommend taking US Route 40 and US Route 1 as alternate routes, as all lanes of northbound I-95 near the scene were closed for what was expected to be an “an extended road closure” as crews fight the fire.
