Chapter 10 of the Police Unity Tour visited the Harford County Sheriff’s Office South Precinct on Sunday during their four-day ride from New Jersey to Washington, D.C.
Once cyclists arrived, the Sheriff’s Office participated in a wreath-laying ceremony to remember those who lost their lives.
Every year, hundreds of cyclists participate in this fundraising bike ride to raise awareness for the police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The money raised goes towards the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial and Museum in D.C.
This year marks the 29th anniversary of the Unity Tour. Chapter 10 of the tour begins their ride from Central New Jersey and travels to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in D.C.
AAUW celebrates Judith Resnik Awards
During the Judith Resnik Awards Celebration, the Harford County Branch of the American Association of University Women recognized 13 high school girls for their academic achievements in the STEM fields.
Over 120 people came to celebrate the girls who are juniors in high school, including Harford County Executive Robert Cassilly and Harford County Board of Education member Carol Mueller.
Students honored included Alex Pedersen (Aberdeen), Emma Shook (Bel Air), Alyssa Stover (C. Milton Wright), Pragnya Jagarlapudi (Edgewood), Camdyn Bailey (Fallston), Emma Graham (Harford Tech), Meghan Greimel (Havre de Grace), Lyric Zamostny (Joppatowne), Samantha Hawk (North Harford), Sophia Tram-Anh Trinh (Patterson Mill), Ishleen Basi (Science and Math Academy), Gabryelle Marin (Swan Creek) and Sylvia Woosley (The John Carroll School).
The event was held on the campus of Harford Community College and originally was held in 1968 in honor of Dr. Judith Resnik, who lost her life in the Challenger shuttle explosion, to encourage young women to enter the STEM field. Resnik was a scientist and AAUW member.
12th Annual Amanda Hichkad CCA Celebration Walk
The 12th annual Amanda Hichkad CCA Celebration walk held over the weekend raised more than $115,000 for Cancer LifeNet. Over the last 12 years, the walk has raised over $1.4 million.
The event brought together 500 community members to the turf field at The John Carroll School to celebrate and remember family and friends who are impacted by cancer.
Rich and Karen Streett and their children, Summer, Spencer and Sydney, were recognized at the walk as the Kaufman Cancer Center’s 2025-26 Honored Family Advocates. Karen received treatment at the Kaufman Cancer Center over the past year and was announced as cancer free earlier this year, according to the University of Maryland, Upper Chesapeake Health in a news release.
Cancer LifeNet is located at the Kaufman Cancer Center at UM UCMC in Bel Air and it provides support services to help patients and their loved ones find resources needed to balance work, family and cancer treatment. The services are free and are offered to Harford and Cecil County residents.
Harford Community College’s Old Bay Improv presents Improv Court
Old Bay Improv, a group at Harford Community College, will hold an improvised court trial called Improv Court on May 31 at 7 p.m.
Improv Court involves actors using comedic short-form improvisation to re-enact the crime and present evidence. Suggestions from the audience controls the trial and helps determine the final verdict.
The event will be held in Joppa Hall on HCC’s campus in the Black Box Theater. Members of the public that would like to attend can purchase tickets online.
Owl Media at Harford Community College Wins Six Apple Awards
Owl Media, a student multimedia publication at Harford Community College, won six national awards across different platforms at the Apple Awards held in New York City.
Student media publications across the country enter the Apple Awards competition. This year, there were 413 entries and the winners were announced at the ProCon 25 Convention held in New York City.
Luke Teigue secured Owl Media’s first wins in the photo categories for “Remembering Rachel Morin One Year Later and “Halloween in New Orleans.” His work also placed second for “Best News Photography” and won an honorable mention for “Best Feature Photography.”
The publication won a third place recognition for “Best Multimedia Package” for projects titled “My Perspective on the People’s March: An Op-ED” which included an article, a video titled “The People’s March 2025,” and a photo package named “The People’s March.” Tacy Brown completed reporting, narration, videography and writing for these pieces as Teigue handled the video editing.
Owl Media’s social media coverage of the People’s March also won third place for “Best Social Media Coverage of a Single Event.”
To end out the event, the publication placed third for “Best Feature Website,” and Brown’s opinion article titled “Cornerstone of Change: The Power of Peaceful Protest” received an honorable mention in the “Best Opinion Column.”
