The boys and girls basketball regular seasons have concluded and Harford County has plenty of highly seeded teams in the MPSSAA regional tournament brackets released Wednesday.
Although the county did not produce a state champion last season, the C. Milton Wright boys reached the state semifinal while the Fallston, Patterson Mill and Perryville girls made it to the state quarterfinals. The last basketball state title winners from Harford County were the Fallston girls in 2022. A county boys squad hasn’t capped their season by holding up a trophy since the Mustangs in 2016.
This year could snap that trend. Thirteen area teams across the boys and girls brackets host first-round matchups, five of which as the top seeds in their respective regions.
Here’s a breakdown of all the playoff seedings and matchups.
Five area boys teams host first-round games
Edgewood is the two-seed in 3A North Region II and is in line for a matchup with cross-county rival and sixth-seeded Aberdeen in the second round if both were to win. The Rams host Digital Harbor on Friday, while the Eagles go to Poly the same night. Bel Air, seeded fifth, will travel to Patterson for its first round matchup.
Edgewood enters the state tournament on a four-game win streak, but the Rams did struggle at times with Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference competition. They lost to Joppatowne, Aberdeen, Patterson Mill and C. Milton Wright in the regular season, but avenged all those early-season losses over the last two weeks, highlighted by a 19-point thumping of the Huskies.
In the 2A bracket, a resurgent North Harford group hosts Harford Tech for a Friday night 2A East Region I first-round matchup that coach Bill Jones said the “gym is going to be packed” for. North Harford won just nine games over the last three seasons combined, but Jones, a Hawks alumni who took over just weeks before the season began, led the group to an 11-9 record in his first year with the program.
Second-seeded C. Milton Wright and No. 3 Fallston are also first round hosts and would meet in the second round. The Cougars’ matchup with Rising Sun is a rematch of both team’s regular season finales, which Rising Sun won 56-55. Fallston took the January meeting.
Patterson Mill is the top seed in 1A North Region II and thus earned a first-round bye. Joppatowne, seeded second, also has a bye to the second round, where it’ll host Lake Clifton in the regional semifinals on Tuesday. Havre de Grace travels to Reginald Lewis for its first round matchup, and a win there would push them to a battle with the Huskies. Perryville is on the road at St. Michaels on Friday for its first-round game.
Jeroud Clark’s Patterson Mill squad breezed through the UCBAC this regular season, going 19-1 with the lone blemish courtesy of Edgewood. The Huskies success has even come as a slight surprise to Clark, whose team is led by juniors and sophomores stepping up and filling leadership roles.
Four area girls teams earn top seeds
Edgewood is the 3A North Region II top seed after a 16-5 regular season and have a bye to the second round. Two-seed Aberdeen hosts Bel Air in an intra-county first-round matchup, a rematch of their regular season meeting that the Eagles won by five in December.
Edgewood plays with a flair and confidence that can be hard to keep up with. They all wear the same matching neon yellow sneakers while on the court to symbolize their unique bond off it, and can drill 3-pointers in bunches to obtain insurmountable leads. Few were successful in slowing coach Wes Laguerre’s Rams down.
Class 2A bracket features three first-round hosts from Harford County in No. 1 Fallston, No. 3 North Harford and No. 4 C. Milton Wright. The Cougars have a bye Thursday night, while the Mustangs and Hawks host a pair of UCBAC foes in North East and Elkton, respectively. Harford Tech, the seventh seed, is on the road against Rising Sun on Thursday.
Like their boys counterparts, the Patterson Mill girls are their region’s top seed and have a first-round bye in the 1A bracket. Perryville also earned an opening-round bye as the top seed in its region after a 16-3 regular season. Joppatowne travels to Reginald Lewis on Thursday night, while Havre de Grace also gets an extended break then hosts Lake Clifton in the Warriors’ first postseason game Monday.
