Midnight fireworks planned for Tuesday night in Havre de Grace have been canceled as a safety precaution. Crews launch fireworks from a barge in the Susquehanna River and high winds and severe weather in other areas of the state are expected.
The city has been hosting the fireworks as part of its New Year’s Eve Duck Drop event in Concord Park for the last 25 years. The free-of-charge local tradition replaces the typical ball drop with a duck in honor of the city’s history rooted in duck decoys.
City officials said in a post on Facebook that despite the cancellation of the fireworks, the Duck Drop will still continue as planned.
“The City of Havre de Grace desires to ring in the new year with fireworks; however, doing so at the risk to the safety of others is not prudent,” the post read. “The Duck Drop will go on as planned and we encourage you to join in the festivities at Concord Point Park.”
According to the National Weather Service, Havre de Grace is not expected to receive rain around midnight, but other tidal areas of the state are — potentially resulting in hazardous conditions for crews working on the fireworks barge in the Susquehanna River.
A wind advisory has been issued for all waters in the state starting Wednesday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The advisory forecasts winds ranging from 15 to 25 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service.
