Three newly elected Havre de Grace City Council members were sworn in Tuesday evening.

Incumbents Johnny Boker and Vicki Jones both won reelection on May 6, with Boker earning 760 votes and Jones getting 623, according to official election results posted May 19 on the city’s website.

Council member Jason Robertson did not run for reelection, ending an eight-year stint on the council. Robertson’s seat was won by Matthew Ellis, who secured 552 votes, defeating five other candidates.

Of the city’s 12,333 registered voters, 1,402 voted in the May 6 election.

This year’s election involved a few hiccups, including the use of paper roll books instead of electronic roll books.

The lack of electronic equipment led to longer wait times.

“Going forward, we will have limited assistance from Harford County,” said Chris Ricci, director of administration for the city. “They’re not going to be able to provide us with the full level of assistance that they had always in the past, but we will be able to get some level of assistance.”

Mayor William Martin assured voters this year’s problems won’t happen again.

“We’re going to have more help and we’re going to be a lot more streamlined,” Martin said. “So, everyone who had to wait in line this year, it’s going to be faster next year.”
