Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Boys basketball
Wilde Lake 59, Atholton 55: The Wildecats (13-4, 9-1 Sierra Division) clinched the division title and spot in the Howard County championship with the win. Dre Hoskins led a balanced effort with 16 points, while Noah Brazil had 14. Devin Wingfield also scored 12 points, while Makensey Miles added 10. For Atholton (10-7, 4-5 Sierra), Cam Lyons tied a game-high with 16 points.
Mt. Hebron 71, Westminster 32: The Vikings (17-2) dominated in a non-conference matchup. Cole Willey led the way with 15 points and was one of four to score in double figures. Tai Akinlosotu (12), Kenny Akinlosotu (10) and Ezra Yauger (10) also finished in double digits.
Elkton 66, Joppatowne 64: Phil Clark poured in 23 points but the Mariners were edged out by the Golden Elks. Kishann Smith had 15 points and four blocks for Joppatowne. Braxton Jackson had 14 points, 11 rebounds and four assists. Dartanun Blakney chipped in 12 points.
Glen Burnie 70, Severn Run 32: Braeden Buchanan scored 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Gophers (11-7) to the win. Chris Maddox added 15 points while Darnell Davis chipped in eight points.
South River 79, Northeast 56: The host Seahawks beat the Eagles. South River was led Jamie Finn (19 points), Jonah Hall (18 points), Jaden McDuffie (15 points), Alec Ehrenfield (9 points) and Jake Evans (9 points).
Annapolis Area Christian 74, Concordia Prep 56: Eli Croskey scored 19 points to lead the host Eagles over the Saints in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference quarterfinal. Other standouts for AACS included: Kendrick Tche-Tafon (15 points), Ant Sheehan (14 points) and Julian Kelly (11 points). The Eagles advance to the semifinals and will travel to St. Paul’s on Thursday.
Broadneck 60, Long Reach 56: Liam Sabo scored 28 points to lead the visiting Bruins over the Lightning. Kamari Williams had 10 points for Broadneck.
Liberty 73, Walkersville 48: Tristan West scored 18 points and Jayden Zumbrun was right behind him with 17 as Liberty picked up a nonconference win.
Girls basketball
Marriotts Ridge 60, Guilford Park 49: The visiting Mustangs beat the Panthers. Marriotts Ridge had three players in double-digit scoring: freshman Riley Jenkins with a season high 21 points, freshman Katie Moraz with 15 points and Lamees Bazzi with 13 points.
Atholton 46, Wilde Lake 44: The Raiders (8-9, 3-6 Sierra Division) edged out the Wildecats. Gisaiah Griffin led the way with 13 points while Julianna Blair added 12. For Wilde Lake (7-10, 3-7 Sierra), Maggie Shidle finished with a game-high 20 points.
Westminster 53, Mount Hebron 26: Maddy Gassman scored 22 points, including her 1,000th career point as the Owls won the nonconference game. She reached the milestone on a pass from Addyson Ruth. Other standouts for Westminster included Xaviah Burgee (12 points) and Aspen Higgs (6 points).
South River 85, Northeast 26: The visiting Seahawks beat the Eagles behind 17 points from Raegan Ogle (17 points). Also leading the way were Kierra West (16 points), Skylar Woodyard (14 points), Karlee Hawkins (6 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) and Elli Oxendine (8 points, 4 rebounds).
