Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Field hockey
Manchester Valley 4, South Carroll 2: The Mavericks grabbed firm hold on first place in Carroll County with the win over the Cavaliers. Allie Largent scored twice in the win, with Lily Brookhart and Barb Guest also scoring goals. Sophie Baer, who entered the game ranked second in the county in assists, handed out her eighth of the year in the game. Alayna Enoff scored both South Carroll goals. Caelin Lopes made 13 saves.
Catonsville 2, Perry Hall 1: Veronica Merriman scored both of the Comets’ goals as they edged out the Gators. Merriman’s second tip-in of a penalty corner play came at the end of the third quarter and broke a 1-1 tie. Perry Hall got a goal from Mikayla Kurcoba, assisted by Delaney Evans.
Bryn Mawr 5, Maryvale Prep 0: Anna Powell had a hat trick and Audrey Lutz scored twice to lead the visiting Mawrtians (6-1, 2-1 Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference) over the Lions (5-1-1, 1-1).
Chesapeake-AA 3, Southern 0: Emersen Miller had a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Cougars over the Bulldogs. Rylee Catterton made 18 saves for Southern.
Glen Burnie 4, Meade 1: Melany Tello scored two goals to lead the visiting Gophers over the Mustangs.
North County 7, Northeast 1: Katie Von berg had two goals and an assist to lead the host Knights over the Eagles. North County got two goals each from Maggie Blanford and Addison Jun.
Crofton 9, Old Mill 0: Charlotte DeForest and Grace Morris each scored two goals and the host Cardinals shut out the Patriots. Olivia Feeley had a goal and an assist for Crofton.
Boys soccer
McDonogh 4, John Carroll 0: The visiting Eagles (6-0-3, 5-0-3 Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference) shut out the Patriots (1-6-1, 1-6-1). Friday, John Carroll travels to Concordia Prep. Saturday, McDonogh travels to Archbishop Curley.
Annapolis Area Christian 1, St. Vincent Pallotti 1: The visiting Eagles (4-2-1, 2-1-1 MIAA B Conference) and the Panthers (8-1-2, 0-1-1) played to a draw. Friday, Pallotti travels to Glenelg Country. Saturday, AACS will host Severn Run.
Eastern Tech 1, Towson 0: Peyton Ziehl knocked in a goal after a David Nesteruk free kick midway through the first half and the Mustangs’ defense made it hold up. Oskar Lyp made seven saves to earn his second shutout of the year.
Chesapeake-AA 3, Southern 0: The Cougars moved to 7-0 with the win. Caleb Ritter, Colton Keeter and Byron Klohr all scored for the Cougars. Connor Weaver added two assists and Sully Long also had one. Ethan Kiniry made two saves in goal.
Broadneck 4, Annapolis 2: Jed Meehan scored twice to lead the host Bruins over the Panthers. Broadneck led 2-1 in the first half. The Panthers had goals from Alejandro Peña and Luis Rodriguez in the loss.
Liberty 6, Francis Scott Key 1: Austen Veach had a hand in four of the Lions’ six goals, scoring two and assisting on two others. Lucas Britos, the county’s leading scorer, tallied his 13th and 14th goals of the season. Nate Frey and Ryan Clapper also scored. Ethan Carpenetti and Connor Clapper each had an assist. In goal, Arjun Singh made seven saves.
Girls soccer
Hereford 5, Dulaney 0: Five Bulls hit the back of the net and CJ Harvey needed to make just two saves to earn the shutout. Caden Bennis, Taylor Saunders, Chloe Martin, Lulu Shive and Sophia Rongione all scored in the win. Bella DeSantis handed out two assists, while Aaliyah Stocks and Allie Marzullo also handed out assists.
Liberty 8, Francis Scott Key 0: Hannah DeVincent scored a goal and handed out four assists. Aver Asom and Bryce Sarver each hit the back of the net twice in the win. Sophia Maciejewski and Adrienne Petroski also scored. Petroski, Alyssa Golombeck and Peony Kang had assists.
Volleyball
South Carroll 3, Francis Scott Key 0: The Cavaliers cruised past the Eagles, 25-8, 25-7, 25-13. Taylor Berger led the win with 10 kills. Ana Soulen put down nine.
Edgewood 3, North East 2: The Rams won a five-set thriller, 27-25, 22-25, 25-18, 18-25, 16-14.
Annapolis 3 Chesapeake Science Point 0: Molly Ralph had 14 service points and three aces to lead the visiting Panthers (6-1) over the Tigers. Annapolis won, 25-11, 25-19, 25-12. Other standouts for the Panthers included: McHale Hughes (15 service points, 18 assists), Lindsay Lyman (10 kills, 3 blocks) and Carolin Heyder (9 kills).
Golf
Marriott’s Ridge 156, Manchester Valley 161, Winters Mill 188, Clear Spring 232: The Mustangs won a quad meet Tuesday at Oakmont. Lila Becker and George Williamson were co-medalists with 37s. Jackson Streett led Manchester Valley with a 38, while Drew Lawson and Aidan Koerbel led Winters Mill with 44s.
