Allyson Gardner, a sophomore at Joppatowne High School in Aberdeen, has been selected as a delegate to the Congress of Future Medical Leaders June 25-27, 2025 at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell campus.

The program is for high school students who want to become physicians or go into medical research fields, according to the National Academy of Future Physicians. It aims to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal.

Gardner’s nomination was signed by Mario Capecchi, winner of the Nobel Prize in Medicine and the Science Director of the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Scientists. She was nominated to represent Maryland based on her academic achievement and leadership potential, according to a news release from the academy.

During the three-day event, students from across the country will listen to Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science recipients discussing medical research; be given advice from medical school deans on what to expect in medical school; witness stories told by patients who are living medical miracles; be inspired by fellow teen medical science students; and learn about cutting-edge advances and the future in medicine and medical technology.

Community input meetings set for zoning applications

The Harford County Department of Planning and Zoning has scheduled two community input meetings to allow residents to provide comments on 66 comprehensive zoning applications received by the department.

The meetings will be held at Aberdeen High School on Nov. 4 and Bel Air High School on Nov. 18, both from 7-9 p.m.

Anyone interested in speaking must sign up to speak prior to the start of the meeting. County staff will be available starting at 6 p.m. to answer questions and offer more information. The meeting will start at 7 p.m. with an introduction from Shane Grimm, director of planning and zoning. Residents will have three minutes each to speak. Those representing groups will be given five minutes each to speak.

The Department of Planning and Zoning has developed an online tracker to view rezoning requests received from property owners. The tracker, which can be found at https://www.harfordcountymd.gov/2001/2025-Comprehensive-Zoning-Review, displays an interactive map of each rezoning request and detailed information about the property. The rezoning tracker will be updated in real time as applications are processed. A zoning log will also be developed to show recommendations made for each parcel by the Planning Advisory Board, the Department of Planning and Zoning and the final decision of the County Council.
