Jury selection began Tuesday in the trial for the teen charged as an adult for the September shooting that killed 15-year-old Warren Grant inside a bathroom at Joppatowne High School.

Jury selection is expected to continue Wednesday, and once it is completed the presentation of evidence will begin. The trial is expected to run through May 30, according to Harford County Circuit Judge Kevin Mahoney.

Jaylen Prince, 16, of Edgewood, is charged as an adult with first-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.  Police say Prince pulled out a handgun during a fight with Grant inside the school and shot him once, killing him.

Harford County State’s Attorney Alison Healey and Assistant State’s Attorney Anthony Baranauskas are prosecuting the case and defense attorney Staci Pipkin is representing Prince.

More than 100 potential jurors gathered in Harford County Circuit Court Tuesday morning for jury selection.

Mahoney asked the jury pool if they had heard anything about the Joppatowne High School shooting, and 74 jurors stood, confirming they had.

Numerous jurors stood when asked if they had “strong feelings” about the fact that the case and offenses in the case involved minors and 16 of the potential jurors said they have an issue with the nature of the alleged crime.

Throughout questioning, only seven jurors did not respond to any of the questions. Mahoney ordered that the seven jurors return Wednesday morning for the second day of jury selection.

The other potential jurors were kept for individual questioning Tuesday, so that the judge, prosecutors and defense attorneys can ask each of them about their responses to earlier questions. The individual questioning helps the judge and attorneys gauge if an individual is suitable to serve on a jury panel.
