A 71-year-old is in stable condition after sustaining burns and jumping from a second-story balcony during an apartment fire Saturday night, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal. A firefighter also received minor injuries.
According to a notice from the fire marshal, the fire occurred in a two-story, four-unit apartment building on Crimson Tree Way in Edgewood around 10:01 p.m.
The occupant reportedly discovered the fire on his stove and tried to extinguish it. The fire then grew “out of control,” prompting him to exit the unit via a sliding-glass door and onto his second-story balcony, the fire marshal said. The man jumped to escape the fire.
He was transported to a hospital for burns covering 20% to 30% of his body and is listed in stable condition, according to the report early Sunday.
Firefighters from Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company responded to the one-alarm fire and were able to extinguish it within 30 minutes, according to the fire marshal’s office. One firefighter sustained minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital.
The fire was mainly contained to the 71-year-old man’s apartment unit, but five other residents were displaced due to moderate smoke, soot and water damage to their units.
The fire is estimated to have caused $250,000 in structural damage and $250,000 in content loss, according to the fire marshal’s office.
