Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire and Emergency Services are fighting multiple uncontrolled fires at the grounds Sunday as a strong smell of smoke and smoggy conditions set in across the Route-40 corridor in Aberdeen and Edgewood.
The proving ground’s fire and emergency services posted on Facebook at 3:30 p.m. that Air Traffic Control and the National Guard are assisting them in fighting multiple “range fires” — fires burning uncontrolled on a range of land.
According to the Harford County government, over 40,000 acres of Aberdeen Proving Ground are forest land.
At least dozens of county residents posted images on social media of the smoky conditions along the Bush River and numerous neighborhoods stretching from Aberdeen to Edgewood.
The Harford County Fire and EMS public information page on Facebook confirmed that the smoke is coming from Aberdeen Proving Ground and urged residents to not call 911 unless they see an active fire.
The Maryland Department of Natural Resources enacted a statewide burn ban on Friday due to “extremely dry conditions” that persist across the state.
