The Harford County Health Department issued a rabies exposure alert after receiving confirmation from the Maryland Department of Health that a stray cat in the Edgewood area tested positive for the virus.
The health department issued its alert on Wednesday after the state confirmed the positive result the day prior. The cat was discovered near Nuttal Avenue in Edgewood, and it “may have exposed other persons and pets in the surrounding area,” according to a news release from the department.
Anyone who has recently come into contact with a stray cat in that area should call 410-877-2300 to speak with health officials and ensure they are not at risk for rabies, the release said.
The health department also provided the following methods to prevent rabies exposure:
- Always keep pets leashed when out for walks and closely monitored in your backyard.
- All cats, dogs and ferrets should remain up to date on their rabies vaccinations through their vet office or local rabies vaccination clinic.
- Cover trash cans and do not leave pet food outside.
- Avoid feeding, petting or interacting with wildlife in any way.
- Notify Harford County Animal Control at 410-638-3505 if you observe a stray animal showing abnormal behaviors such as excessive affection, aggression, lethargy or disorientation.
