A two-alarm fire that began Friday morning claimed the lives of two people inside an Aberdeen home, the Office of the State Fire Marshal said Friday.
Aberdeen Police first responded to the home at 184 Darlington Ave. at about 8:15 a.m., when a 77-year-old man told them two of his family members were still inside the house, the office said in a statement.
Though the victims have yet to be identified, they are believed to be the man’s 73-year-old wife and 30-year-old son. The home was the family’s primary residence.
Police were unable to immediately enter the home due to the fire. When firefighters arrived from the Aberdeen Fire Department and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire and Emergency Services, high winds complicated their response, spreading the fire throughout the home, the statement said.
Seventy firefighters worked for over an hour before the fire was controlled, it said.
The 77-year-old man is in stable condition at Bayview Medical Center, Oliver Alkire, spokesman for the fire marshal’s office told The Baltimore Sun Friday afternoon. An officer who was treated for smoke inhalation has since been released, he said.
A family member will assist the man when he gets out of the hospital, Alkire said.
The cause and origin of the fire are still under investigation, the office said in its statement. No remains of any working smoke alarms were found within the home.
Investigators do not have any evidence of a criminal act at this time.
Over 24 hours, the fire marshal’s office said, six people in Maryland died in three fires across the state. Two fatalities in Anne Arundel County occurred last night and two were in Allegany County just hours after the Aberdeen fire.
