Three adults were displaced following a house fire in Pylesville on New Year’s Day, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s office.

Fire crews responded to a home on Scott Road at 3:50 a.m., and it took them three hours to bring the fire under control.

Officials reported that an occupant woke up to the sound of “popping and cracking” and discovered a fire in his bedroom. He alerted his mother and brother, and they attempted to extinguish the fire with pots of water. However, the fire quickly spread beyond their control, prompting them to call 911.

The homeowner mentioned having five cats, and at least one escaped, but the other cats remain unaccounted for at this time, the fire marshal’s office said.

The fire marshal’s office said that due to the home’s “balloon-frame type construction,” the fire breached the walls and extended into the attic and roof. Heavy hoarding conditions on the second floor made it difficult to extinguish the fire, the fire marshal’s office said.

Harford County Disaster Assistance and the Red Cross are providing assistance.

A cause of the fire has not yet been reported.
