Harford Transit LINK will offer free rides on all its fixed routes on June 18 in celebration of National Dump the Pump Day, according to a news statement.
National Dump the Pump Day is a day reserved for encouraging people to utilize public transportation instead of driving.
The LINK operates seven fixed routes Monday through Friday with 12 countywide buses that also travel into Cecil County. The buses are connected with AMTRAK, MTA and its commuter buses, MARC and regional Greyhounds.
“Reliable public transportation strengthens our local economy, supports our workforce and provides a cost-effective, responsible option for residents and visitors alike,” said County Executive Bob Cassilly in a news statement.
Key service areas the bus travels to include Harford Community College, Perryman Peninsula and Harford Mall.
Users can download two free apps, Passio Go! And Token Transit, to see bus routes, times and fare.
Adult Mental Health First Aid Training
Harford Community College will offer three sessions focused on Adult Mental Health First Aid Training between June and July, according to a news release.
Each session will consist of two hours of self-paced content followed by 5.5 hours of instructor-led training, the college said.
The program teaches adults how to recognize signs and symptoms that suggest a potential mental health challenge, listen nonjudgmentally and give reassurance to people who may experience one, and refer people to necessary professional support and services.
The sessions will be offered on June 7, June 21 and July 19.
The college believes this program will be helpful for people over the age of 18, including social workers, police, faith-based and non-faith-based support groups, and anyone who would like to assist family and friends.
People interested in participating can register on the school’s website.
Phoenix Festival Theater presents ‘Newsies’
Phoenix Festival Theater will present Disney’s “Newsies” this month at Harford Technical High School in Bel Air, Harford Community College said in a news release.
Newsies, according to the college, is a story about a newsboy, Jack Kelly, who dreamt of a better life away from the hardships of the streets. When distribution prices are raised, Jack finds a cause to fight for and rallies his army of newsies on strike.
The production will be played four times between June 20, June 21 and June 22 with tickets starting at $22. Tickets can be purchased on the college’s website.
Chesapeake Gallery showing solo exhibition, ‘Entry Way’
The Chesapeake Gallery at Harford Community College will show a solo exhibition, “Entry Way,” of paintings by Brooklyn-based artist Ella Wearing.
The exhibit will be displayed on the second floor of HCC’s student center from June 12 to July 28. An artist talk will also be held on June 14 in the gallery.
The paintings focus on patterns that Wearing observed growing up, specifically the mosaic tiles that are found in entryways. Wearing analyzes parts of the past that society continued to interact with in their daily lives and reforms the patterns into something that’s familiar.
Since 2009, Wearing has shown art in London, Glasgow, New Jersey, Chicago and New York.
