Harford County Public Schools will be closed Thursday and Friday due to icy conditions. With the two closures, the school system will exhaust all six of its built-in inclement weather days for the year.

In an alert to families, HCPS said it anticipates schools will be open and accessible next week.

“Families should plan ahead for safe travel if sidewalks or routes near their homes have not yet been cleared,” the alert said.

It added that essential personnel should await further instruction.

Harford County schools have been closed since Monday due to heavy snowfall over the weekend. The additional closures will push the last day of school for students to June 24.

Once the school system has exhausted all built-in days, it can request a waiver from the Maryland State Board of Education from the state’s requirement of 180 days of instructional time for students each year.

This year, HCPS had six embedded-inclement weather days in the academic calendar. Next year, the district will drop to three weather days to mirror other school systems in the state.
