Safety and accessibility enhancements made to the intersection of Joppa Farm and Trimble roads in Joppatowne will include enhanced signage, a camera to detect vehicles and optimized signal operations, according to Harford County.

County officials said the project is necessary due to the current infrastructure exceeding its life cycle. They said the implementation of the “state-of-the-art” technology will increase overall safety and reduce maintenance needs.

Maryland State Police report 11 crashes at the location in the past two years. Of the 11 crashes, six resulted in at least one injury.

The camera at the intersection will not be used to ticket drivers for red light violations or other traffic infractions but will be used to detect vehicles at the intersection to allow communication with nearby State Highway Administration traffic signals and facilitate more efficient signal timing, according to county officials.

Other improvements at the intersection will include new pedestrian signals and crosswalks, improved curbs, and American with Disabilities Act-compliant access ramps.

Construction on the enhancements is expected to begin around late summer or early fall.
