The man who threatened to “blow Perryville up” and told police the local Great Wolf Lodge was on his list pleaded guilty late last month in Cecil County District Court to threatening mass violence.

Christopher Giles, 66, of Havre de Grace, was sentenced Jan. 23 to 10 years, suspending all but the time he had already served, and was placed on a three-year probation that included an alcohol and drug treatment program.

Neither the Harford County State’s Attorney’s Office nor the Office of the Public Defender could be reached for comment on this case.

Giles was initially arrested in early October and charges were dropped against him Nov. 25. Just over a week later, the State’s Attorney’s Office refiled charges against him — an action Seth Okin, who served as Giles’ defense attorney in the first case, called “horrible” and “nonsense.”

Okin, who did not represent Giles in the second trial, said he believes Judge Clara E. Campbell made the correct decision to not incarcerate Giles and he believes the sentence was ultimately a “good result,” pointing out the man’s clean record before the incident.

“Some people don’t handle excess or unanticipated stress, anxiety, all those things that just come at you. … It’s still not a reason to be incarcerated,” Okin previously said to The Aegis.

Giles called police around 4:30 p.m. Oct. 5 to complain about someone in the Perryville Police Department who put him in handcuffs, charging documents say. While talking to Perryville police, Giles said he was “going to blow Perryville up” and Great Wolf Lodge was on his list. The phone call is what lead to the threatening mass violence charge against him.
