One of Harford Mall’s oldest tenants, Friendly’s, permanently closed Saturday. Now, the restaurant is selling off its equipment.

A cash-only equipment sale was set for Monday and Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Friendly’s was one of the first tenants to move into the Harford Mall when it opened in the early 1970s. During its more than 50 years of operations, Friendly’s witnessed the Harford Mall’s transition from a prime retail hub with neon lighting in the ceiling and a food court, to its current condition of empty storefronts and low customer traffic.

Numerous stores in the Harford Mall, such as Macy’s, Gamestop, For Your Entertainment and others, have closed in the past two years. The Greene Turtle Restaurant closed in April.

The closures are happening amid a redevelopment that aims to convert the mall’s parking lot into two four-story apartment buildings with 249 new apartments and a four-story parking garage. Another phase of the redevelopment aims to turn a portion of the mall into a $100 million shopping center anchored by a 35,000-square-foot Whole Foods and 48,000 square feet of luxury boutiques, restaurants, shops and amenities.

In September, plans for the redevelopment were granted an extension by the Bel Air Planning Commission after developers said the complex project needed more time.

The plans were granted a 12-month extension, and approval will be voted on by the commission in January 2027.
