The boys and girls basketball regular seasons have concluded, and Harford County has plenty of highly seeded teams in the public school regional tournament brackets released Tuesday, the morning of the Upper Chesapeake Bay Athletic Conference championship contests.
The county did not produce a basketball state champion last season and will be searching for its first since the Fallston girls won a Class 2A title in 2022. A boys team hasn’t reached the mountaintop since C. Milton Wright in 2016. The Patterson Mill and C. Milton Wright boys and the Huskies and Fallston girls all reached state quarterfinals in 2024-25, but none advanced from there.
Those four are again among the favorites to break through this season. Eleven area teams across the boys and girls brackets will host first-round matchups Friday and Saturday, three of which are the top seeds in their respective regions. The region semifinals through the state quarterfinals will stretch across next week before the state semifinals on March 10 and 11 and state championships — held at UMBC after being moved from University of Maryland — from March 12 to 14.
Here’s a breakdown of every local team’s playoff seeding and matchup:
Edgewood, Patterson Mill, Fallston girls earn first-round byes
The Rams and Huskies have stood above everyone in Harford County this regular season, and that’s true again with Tuesday’s bracket release. They’re both the top seeds in their respective regions, Edgewood in Class 3A North Region I and Patterson Mill in 1A North Region I.
The Cougars, who lost to both in the regular season, fell just short of a top seed and are slotted second in 2A East Region I, enough to automatically move on to the regional semifinal.
Further down, four more area teams will host first-round games. North Harford (2A North Region I) and Havre de Grace (1A East Region I) are seeded third in their respective regions, while Bel Air (3A North Region I) and C. Milton Wright (2A East Region I) earned No. 4 seeds. The Hawks will host North East; the Warriors will host Western Tech; the Bobcats will host Patapsco; and the Mustangs will host Elkton.
Aberdeen (3A North Region I), Harford Tech and Joppatowne (both 1A North Region I) are the Harford County girls teams going on the road in the first round, with the Eagles traveling to Towson, the Cobras going to Loch Raven and the Mariners facing Pikesville.
Bel Air would face Edgewood in the regional semifinals with an opening-round victory, while North Harford would go to Fallston, and Harford Tech to Patterson Mill with wins. And Joppatowne and Havre de Grace would square off in the second round if they advance past their first tests.
Six boys teams are hosting first-round games
Patterson Mill, in 1A North Region I, is the only Harford County boys team to earn a No. 1 seed, reflective of its uniquely dominant regular season. Fallston (2A East Region I) and Harford Tech (1A North Region I) are the No. 2 seeds in their regions. Edgewood (3A North Region I) and C. Milton Wright (2A East Region I) are slotted third in their groups. And Aberdeen (3A North Region I) and North Harford (2A East Region I) are seeded fourth in their respective brackets.
The Huskies and Cougars have first-round byes. The Cobras host Western Tech, the Rams host Patapsco, the Mustangs host North East, the Eagles host Towson, and the Hawks host Rising Sun in opening-round action later this week.
No. 7 seed Bel Air will travel to Milford Mill for its opening-round playoff game in the 3A North Region I bracket, while No. 5 seed Havre de Grace and sixth-seeded Joppatowne go to Pikesville and Loch Raven, respectively, in 1A North Region I.
The brackets will allow for several potential inter-county matchups in the regional semifinals and title games. Edgewood and Bel Air victories would pit them against each other in the second round, as would wins from Harford Tech and Joppatowne. C. Milton Wright would see Fallston in the second round — a rematch of a tight December meeting that the Cougars won by just two.
